blogger brunch

New Orleans Blogger Brunch

Saturday was the Blogger Brunch, a brain child between Missy (from Now Listen, Missy) and I, and it exceeded my personal expectations.

BloggerBrunch

Missy and I had talked about that even if it was just the two of us, we'd still have fun and enjoy the opportunity to talk about blogging. Luckily, we had a pretty good turn out. It was small and intimate but I found that helpful as we all got to talk to each other as a group.

We had mimosas and coffee (option whiskey for the coffee), because we live in New Orleans and like to have alcohol for all social engagements. ;) The food, prepared by Missy's boyfriend, was delicious (and there were some other nibbles brought by myself and other bloggers). We all plated up and got the show on the road.

We talked about sources of revenue and display ads versus affiliate links. We also touched on buying ads and if it is worth the cost. It was a good mix of veteran, middle of the road (like me), and pretty fresh in the game bloggers, which was really nice. Questions that the newer bloggers had were able to be answered by us middle bloggers and my questions were answered by the veterans. Mallory, of Miss Malaprop, was our blogging guru. Any question we had, she had a great answer and was very thorough with her explanations. I was worried, at the end, that we were scaring her off; because in the last hour or so of the brunch, we were all basically sitting around her, listening to her talk and asking her questions. Luckily, she is an amazing person who genuinely wants to help others and loved the experience.

One of the most interesting aspects of the brunch was discovering how diverse we are as bloggers. A couple of bloggers are using their platforms as a way to get their names out and promote their freelancing/non-day job professional pursuits; so their monetizing of their blogs is a very different strategy than say a blogger that wants to just earn extra/side income from it. We also had bloggers who do not monetize at all, but have in the past or are looking to go that way in the future.

We didn't just talk about revenue, though. We also talked about using social media, driving traffic, and SEO optimization. The amount of knowledge and experience at the brunch was a lot to take in. It really and truly felt like a mini blogger conference!

Megan brought her little man to the brunch, and he seemed excited to be there, too. I was super excited that Megan brought along a preview copy of the book we did together! I can't wait until they are finished printing!

As we were wrapping up, everyone really seemed excited that this little group exists and can't wait to get together again! It seems like Missy and I have stirred up a local community that is more than willing to help each other grow and support each other's endeavors. There were a few bloggers who were invited and couldn't attend, hopefully they will make it to the next brunch! And yes, there will be more of these in the future!

coffee

If we were having coffee I'd share, first and foremost, that the first Blogger Brunch get-together was amazing. I felt like I was at a mini blogger conference! I loved getting to meet new people who get what I'm talking about when it comes to my passion, this blog. I'm not going to talk about it here though, because tomorrow I'm going to be posting a recap of the event. It was so much fun!

If we were having coffee, I'd share that I'm still making tweeks and fixes to Lazy Lady, but I'm feeling really confident with the direction I'm taking it. I'm not going to be changing up the content, for awhile anyway, but I am going to be making some adjustments to regular series as the need arises. The changes I've been making are more about my switch to being a for profit blog and how I want to go about that process. Some things about this transition haven't been working for me, so I'm definitely reevaluating the sources I'm using. All behind the current stuff, but it's been a big part of my blog work for the past week. One of the changes is that I've joined the PassionFruit network and I am really excited to see how well that works out.

If we were having coffee, I'd share that Mr. LL and I are sooo over our current living situation. Last week, I wrote about how I wanted to do a purge, and I did. I got our bedroom and its closet cleared out of things that neither of us use/need/will miss. A lot went to Goodwill and a fair amount into the garbage. Who saves trash? This lady, apparently. Still, we are just too on top of each other in this tiny apartment. When we need our space, there really isn't anywhere to go to get it. We've been in this place for about 3 years now and our lease is up again in May. We are really trying to move then, hopefully somewhere just a bit bigger and not too much more in rent. We do want to buy a home one day, but we are still building our savings and paying down our debts.

I'm not entirely sure what else to talk about, so I guess that means we are out of coffee. Till next time, I hope you have a great week!

If we were having coffee, I'd tell you it has been a rough couple of days. Friday I spent with Bigby and our veternarian. He's doing ok now, but he's still sore from his ordeal. I fell asleep with him that afternoon and when Mr. LL got home, I got up in grump-state. So we had a small fight (about nothing, really) and that kinda set the tone for the weekend, unfortunately. Everyone is okay now, though.

As I sip my coffee, I'd share that I'm super excited about the Blogger Brunch going down this upcoming weekend. I hope it as fun and as helpful as I envision it being. When I came up with the idea, it was born out of the fact that I'm starting this blog over, and it feels like the first time, and two of my coworkers have also started blogging recently. We talk to each other at work about blog things and share tips, so I thought it would be great if even just us three got together outside of work and talked about all of this stuff. Right now, there are 9 people who RSVPed to the Facebook invite, so that's even better! I'd love to have a nice little mix of new and experienced bloggers together to talk about blogging.

If we were having coffee, I'd share this exciting bit of news: Once A Month Gamer is moving to Lazy Lady! That's right! Diana at Part Time Monster agreed to let me move my monthly tabletop review to Lazy Lady, and in exchange, my I Heart It series on comic books/webcomics will be moving to her site. I think this will be a better fit for both of our blogs. I am so excited and the first OAMG post on Lazy Lady goes up tomorrow! I'll be review Tsuro, which is a lovely game and one of my new favorites.

If we were having coffee, I'd also tell you that I feel like purging my entire apartment. I have some GIANT garbage bags, and I'm going to fill them with all the miscellaneous stuff we have in our place that we never even look at. I'm so tired of living in clutter and we really just do not have the space for it. I'm even writing about it here so I can get myself motivated, today, to start the process. In fact, I'm off to go do just that...and some laundry. Somehow, we've lost a lot of our towels. I'm not sure where they went. That's a random thought thrown in and I will take that as a cue that my mind is ready to go do other things. I hope you have a great week!
